Roman road network found in South West England
In counties Devon and Cornwall new road, dating back to roman times, was discovered. Research was conducted by scientists from University of Exeter. Research was done from 2016 to 2022.
In orded to do that the new LIDAR technique was used. This technique allows to scan an entire piece of land by lasers and thus found gradients and flood risk which allowed to map out all of the network.
This is on of the first applications of the technique proving it's effectiveness. However picture that appeared was fragmented and roads were cut by areas without any signs of transport system.
Team then developed model which was based on geography and shortest connections between two points and allowed them to predict lacking parts of roads.
Researches hope that better knowledge of roman railroad in south west can be useful for predicting places of uknown settlements and military bases.
